"Approaching The Iron Curtain" - This programme celebrates the life and work of Shostakovich on the 40th anniversary of his death.
Bernstein Piano Trio Op.2; Copland Piano Trio ‘Vitebsk’; Shostakovich Piano Trio no.1 in C minor Op.8; Shostakovich Piano Trio no.2 in E minor Op.67
The Rautio Trio will perform dramatic 20th century works spanning two decades leading to the end of the Second World War.
Despite the apparent contrast of American and Soviet musical styles, these three composers are linked by several historical, cultural and personal connections and all display influences of Jewish Eastern European musical tradition. A champion of Shostakovich’s music in the West, Bernstein’s lively trio is an explosion of American post-depression optimism, whilst his mentor, Copland, draws us into a bleaker world with his striking trio based on a Jewish theme. Shostakovich’s youthful and exuberant first piano trio is programmed alongside the monumental second trio which plunges us back into the darkness of Stain’s USSR.

Shattered Landscapes
The second of the Rising Stars programmes explores the devastating impact of war on the natural world. Sally Beamish’s ‘Voices in Silence’ evokes a post-war world, a devastated landscape at dawn punctuated by the calls of frogs from bomb craters and the whistling of a bird on a barbed wire fence. Messiaen’s iconic ‘Quartet for the End of Time’ was written while the composer was imprisoned in a prisoner-of war camp in 1940 - 1941 and features many imitations of birdsong, a subject which was to fascinate him throughout his life.
Beamish - Voices in Silence; Messiaen - Quartet for the End of Time
Anna Hashimoto - clarinet; Tamsin Waley-Cohen - violin; Richard Uttley - piano; Victoria Simonsen - cello; Kumi Matsuo - piano

The Four Seasons
The first of the festival's Rising Stars recitals undertakes a journey through the four seasons led by Piazzolla’s evocative ‘Four Seasons of Buenos Aires’. Alongside pieces from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, Brahms’ autumnal Clarinet Trio and an unusual version of Beethoven’s enduringly popular ‘Spring’ sonata is the second work in our portrait of Sally Beamish - her sonata for violin and piano ‘Winter Trees’.
Piazzolla - The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires; Gershwin arr. Heifetz - Items from Porgy and Bess; Brahms - Clarinet Trio in A minor Op. 114; Beamish - Sonata ‘Winter Trees’; Beethoven arr. Korody-Kreutzer Sonata for Piano and Clarinet (violin) in F major Op. 24 ‘Spring’
